Mathildenhöhe with its artist colony

The Mathildenhöhe is the highest rise in downtown Darmstadt. Here you can have wonderful walks and get lost in time while strolling through the English-style landscaped park.

Here in 1899, the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig founded one of the most beautiful art nouveau ensembles, the Darmstadt artist colony. Thus, he made out of Darmstadt a center for the art nouveau.

Of special interest, you will find here the Plane Tree Grove and the Russian Chapel as well as the catacombs built underneath.

In the Art Nouveau residential buildings on the Mathildenhöhe, referred to as the Artist Colony, artists worked until 1914. Beside the residential buildings, you can visit the exhibition and workshop buildings.
